No B.S Friday: Change comes from going deep
Sometimes I start writing a blog here and I catch myself thinking, “have I said all of this before?”
It’s possible. I’ve written over a thousand blogs over the past ten years. There’s definitely themes that emerge. There’s definitely things I feel passionately about. There’s definitely ways that people sabotage themselves that just make me slap my forehead.
But while I don’t want to risk repeating myself – because the Gods of the Google Algorithm would probably punish me if I did – while I don’t want to risk repeating myself, the truth is I probably don’t repeat myself enough.
Well, actually it depends. It depends on what you’re looking for from this blog. If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration and a bit of a giggle on your way home from work in the afternoon, then the amount of variety is probably perfect.
But if you’re looking to engineer lasting change in your life, then there’s probably way too much variety.
Because change comes from going deep, not from going broad.
I have a friend who consumes a lot of podcasts around wealth and success. She’s always getting exposure to new systems of wealth, or new strategies to overcoming her obstacles.
And that’s great. Its awesome.
But it’s not where the work is.
The work is in incorporating those insights into your day to day reality.
It’s like if I were to tell you, imaging that you’re hearing it for the first time, that to be wealthy you need to cultivate a healthy level of self-worth.
And that’s fantastic advice. I clearly know what I’m talking about.
But that advice doesn’t do a single thing to shift your life until you start making its truth part of your reality.
That means confronting the old patterns of thought that erode your sense of self-worth. It means defusing the parts of your inner-monologue that put yourself
down. It means constructing new narratives of self-worth, and repeating them over and over until the neural pathways are deeply carved into your mind, and those positive thoughts become your new normal.
This is a process. It takes time. But that is how change happens. By going deep.
But if you hear that advice, get a little inspired by it, and then just simply move on to the next podcast without taking any steps to incorporate its teaching – then it’s only a little better than useless.
Exposing yourself to a broad range of ideas is great – it’s very entertaining – but the work only starts when we go deep – when we work with the same idea over and over until it becomes part of who we are.
Go deep not broad.
And that’s why I try to offer fresh takes on familiar themes – self-empowerment, radical responsibility, the magic of mindset – because I’m trying to take us deep.
That, and because I’m not about to become a food blogger with six fantastic recipes for veggie muffins.
