New year. New you. Time to get focused.
I hope this year has limited options for you.
I hope it’s a year that doesn’t give you too many choices. And if it does give you too many choices, I hope you have the discipline and focus to trim and limit your options yourself.
I know this is a funny sort of blessing to start the year with. (Welcome back by the way. Have a good break? How was Christmas?)
But when I look through the little window my internet connection gives me of the world, I see so many opportunities.
This really is a phenomenal time to be alive. A phenomenal market to be investing in. The opportunities are endless.
But that’s a mixed blessing.
Because I don’t think humans are really designed for a lot of options.
And for most of our evolutionary history, the options were limited. There were probably only ever two or three berries in season at any one time. One or two animals worth hunting. Probably only a handful of roles to play in the theatre of primitive caveman society.
Do you have any openings for philosopher-philanthropist with an intense interest in sports?
No. No have that. Only have opening for hairy guy who hits things with rocks. You want?
And so we just never built the biological hardware required to deal with an abundance of options.
But we like options. We like to collect them. They’re bright and shiny things and we want to hoard them.
And so a lot of us can spend a lot of years dipping our toes into different options, but never really committing, because commitment requires letting go of options.
And we don’t like that.
And so we dabble in shares, but we don’t fully commit.
And then we dabble in options and FX trading, but we don’t really commit.
And then we dabble in property, but we don’t really commit because we hear there might be a better way to do it, and maybe we should wait until we found out what it is.
We get paralysed by having too many options.
And so that’s why I say that this year, I wish that you year is filled with a nicely limited number of options.
And if it’s not – if it’s like most years in recent history where there is a mind-boggling array of things you could become, careers you could pursue and interests you could cultivate – then I sincerely hope that you find the focus and the discipline to limit your options.
Limit them down. And then keep limiting. Keep going until you’re left with just one option.
The one road ahead.
And then give it everything you’ve got.
If you can do this, then the amateur astrologer in me believes that the year will give you ample reward for your efforts, (although an old acquaintance may inspire thoughts of travel in the second half of the year.)
But that’s my wish for you in 2023.
May you get so focused there’s only one thing left to do.
Knock 2023 right out of the park.
JG.
