Your opportunity to win an I-pad – and make a full-power start to the year. Challenge Eight – Full Permission
I give you full permission to be whatever the flip you want.
Ok, this is the very last challenge in the Knowledge Source Power Challenge – your opportunity to set a cracking start to the year and win some great prizes.
Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far. Regardless of what you have done with your challenges, simply having given your energy to these eight challenges is a powerful statement of commitment and self-belief.
Take a moment to congratulate yourself, and know that greatness is coming.
If you haven’t done all eight, it’s not too late. You only go in the prize draw if you get all eight done. You can hit each of them here:
Challenge One: Energy
Challenge Two: Know your pain
Challenge Three: Take the reins
Challenge Four: Radical Honesty
Challenge Five: Connection
Challenge Six: Receiving
Challenge Seven: Pure Desire
Challenge Eight: Full Permission
(The spam filter was set a bit aggressively, so I think some people couldn’t go back to the earlier ones… That is fixed now.)
So… I’ve had to think long and hard about this last challenge. There’s a few things I could offer that would give you a full power up. But what I really wanted was a key – one thing that could really open the whole game right up. And this is it:
Permission.
Sadly, we live in a permission deficit. Perhaps it’s the price we pay for the authoritarian power structures we’ve inherited. Perhaps it’s an over-active social mind that always wants to please everybody.
But whatever the case, most of us feel that we simply do not have the permission to live the lives we want. We do not feel that we are allowed to follow the code of our own unique souls.
The gates of permission start out as external. (Step out of the car Mr Giaan. You were clocked doing 160kph in a parking lot. You’re not allowed to do that.)
They then become intimate. (No feet on the table, little Jonny. I don’t want you bringing your mates home at 3a.m anymore Jon. You guys keep urinating on the potplants and the leaves are going brown.)
And then they become internalised. (Oh, I couldn’t possibly quit my job. My wife would freak out. I couldn’t possibly become an actor. My father has his heart set on me being a doctor. I won’t let myself do that.)
Now in isolation, any one of these rules might make sense. (The pot plants really were turning brown.) But what I think happens is that we start to live in a framework of right and wrong.
We start to think that there is a right way of being. A right way of operating. And it creeps into everything we do. It over-reaches.
And we mistake permission for the particular for permission for the general.
Let me explain what I mean. So say for example, I imagine that being a trapeze artist will make me happy. My wife doesn’t want me to do that because my eyes aren’t very good.
I don’t have permission to be a trapeze artist, but I then think that I don’t have permission to be happy.
The general (e.g happiness) is always off limits until it is enabled by an allowable specific.
The mistake I make, and we all make, is that because we don’t have permission for a specific (being a trapeze artist), I think I don’t have permission for the general (to be happy).
As a result, many of us simply feel we do not feel we have permission to be happy, to be loved, to be wealthy, to be purpose-driven and fulfilled. Whatever.
So today I want to attack this head on. This is your challenge:
Pick one thing you want in your life right now. Go over to the blog and write:
I give myself permission to…
Then write whatever it is. I give myself permission to be happy. I give myself permission to be wealthy. I give myself permission to go dancing. I give myself permission to go out drinking with the boys.
Feel into it. Give yourself total permission.
Then, I also want you to do an exercise called “blurts”. So write your statement down ten times. Each time you write it, listen to that part of your mind that ‘blurts out’ and tries to shoot it down.
So for me it might be like:
I want to be a cheerleader for the Richmond Tigers.
(Not with those legs, tubby.)
I want to be a cheerleader for the Richmond Tigers.
(Pfft. Dancing is for girrrls.)
I want to be a cheerleader for the Richmond Tigers.
(All your mates will laugh at you.)
Watch what your resistances are. What your blockages are. Where it is you are not getting permission from. It is very instructive.
(IMPORTANT WARNING)
This is not one of those new-agey things where I’m giving you permission to be a self-obsessed arsehole.
Rather, what we need to do is work back from the general to the specific.
e.g I give myself permission to go drinking with the boys, because I love it.
But, my wife needs her sleep and the pot plants need the right pH balance. I can respect that.
Therefore, we will go over to Robbo’s place.
The point is that when we feel that we don’t have permission to do specific things that make us happy, we mistakenly feel we don’t have permission to be happy in general. We need to reverse that. Empower the general, then figure out the specifics afterwards.
So that’s today’s challenge.
Get over to the blog and finish this sentence: I give myself permission to…
Do it ten times at home and watch your blurts
Don’t be a self-obsessed arsehole.
And this year, let’s give ourselves full permission to live the most radically wonderful lives possible.
Jon

I give myself permission to be guilt-free when staying true to myself. Easier said than done. To do the right thing or not to do the right thing? Who is to say what is right or wrong? How can doing the right thing feel so wrong and fills you with dread and resentment? Yet doing the wrong thing burdens you and leaves you with a sense of loss. I wish that decision can be taken off my hands, yet wishing that fills me with shame. I pray for help and guidance. I pray for an answer. I pray that when I make that decision, I can stay true to myself but can I be free of the consequences?

Firstly, I give myself permission to show emotions which I am least good at. Especially, when I get angry, I tend to content the feeling, which I believe very bad for my spirit.
Secondly, I give myself permission to make more mistakes. As I grew up in Japan, I always think that I have to everything perfect. Japanese mindset goes like “Someone who makes mistakes is very embarrassing or a loser” but i learned it is not. You learn so much from your mitakes. So I’ll try whatever my guts tells me to do without feeling fear of making mistakes. I want to be unstoppable.

Much the same as with ‘take the reins’, it has been really instructive to listen to my negative inner voice. The more I consciously considered giving myself permission, the quieter the little voice became.
And I’ve done it. I’ve made the choice.
The voice started screaming again, but it’s just a truculent child. It’s just after attention and I’m going to ignore it.

I give myself permission to start my long desired sustainable and artistic architecture townhouse development business. (it´s impossible to make a great quality development that is profitable… the market wants the product, but not the price tag… you are not really that talented to achieve it anyway… the banks won´t lend you the money… no partner will trust you…)
I give myself permission to be a night owl without feeling regret every day. (working hours should be during the day… you are setting a bad example for your kids… go on lazy bones, get up, it´s your own fault you went to bed at 4am… if you keep doing this you will never fix your sleeping patterns… you would concentrate better during the day if you just slept during the night…)

I give myself permission to not be so focussed on work to the detriment of living life.
(Can I stand the whinging from my partner that Im not working? She might have to get off the iPad and Netflix and get out and work for a change! Shock horror)

No 8 I give myself permission to have financial freedom through property renovation and development and become successful enough to be able to own my own home again for me and my son and design it as a ‘grand designs’ style home, with all the latest environmentally sound cutting edge technological innovations. My son could have a cat again and mend his broken heart when we had to give our cat away when the house had to be sold and we had to go into rented accommodation – rented doesn’t allow pets. I give myself permission for me and my son to own our own ‘home’ again instead of renting someone else’s ‘house’. I give myself permission to choose what colour I paint the walls and choose what way to landscape the garden. I give myself permission to pay money each month for where I live that is an investment into my own son’s inheritance, so he does not have to ‘eat rats off the street’!. I give myself permission to relive my creativity through expressing myself in my own home as I did in the past. I give myself permission to have the time to write my film script that holds a significant answer to the worst thing about live, in the form of a thriller, and to be involved in the creative production process! And I will keep my self sabotaging thoughts a secret, though it was useful to break them down and think my way around them : )
