Talk is cheap… Here’s what isn’t….

Posted in Success

That’s right, talk is cheap.

Almost useless.

Two quotes that put this into perspective…

“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” – Lincoln

Another…

“If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out and meet it.” – Winters

That’s why talk is cheap, do you get it?

The world doesn’t pay you for what you know, it pays you for what you do.

There’s an old saying, that the universe rewards action. Yet, I see so many people who get bogged down by…

Over-analysing… Over-planning… Over-organising…

…When all you need is action.

Here’s why action is the only thing that matters…

When you take a step forward and do something, you trigger a cascading effect.

Others pay attention, opportunities are drawn to you, others with similar goals are aligned to you, and you most importantly start getting feedback as to whether your action is moving you towards your goal or further away.

Now I’m not getting all spiritual on you, what I’m about to say next will clarify that.

MOTION beats MEDITATION every time.

Here’s an example…

I was at a seminar recently at (of all places) Atlanta, Georgia in the States.

Now I’ve seen this exercise many times, and the result is always the same.

The seminar presenter held up a $100 bill and asked, “Who wants the $100 bill?”

80% of the room put their hand up, some of them were waving vigorously, others were shouting out, “I want it!… That $100 bill is mine!… I’ll take it!”

Maybe there were a few who closed their eyes and started meditating, imagining the bill was in their hands.

The seminar presenter stood there motionlessly and reinforced, “Do you really want it?”

Eventually, somebody jumped out of their seat, rushed to the front of the room and took the bill out of the presenter’s hand.

One guy was $100 richer, because he simply took action. He got off of his butt, put all ego aside, and got the reward.

That’s why ACTION and MOTION beats SITTING ON YOUR BUTT thinking about it.

You’re probably thinking, “So Jon, why didn’t you jump up and get the $100?”

Well, to be fair to everyone in the room, the presenter, before he pulled out the $100 said, “If you’ve seen this exercise before, you’re disqualified from participating.”

Is that fair enough?

He did go on to ask the audience why they didn’t get out of their seat, and there were all sorts of excuses.

* I thought you were just tricking.
* There must have been some sort of catch, and I didn’t want to look silly.
* I was too far back in the room.
* I didn’t want to look like a greedy scum-bag.
* I was waiting for further instructions.

There were lots more, and I could go on. But the above ones were the major excuses.

There is a success principle that goes like this…

“How you do anything is how you do everything.”

That’s why talk is cheap and quite frankly dangerous.

The only thing that isn’t is ACTION.

Hope this helps.

P.P.S. Hey! I’m not an island. The motivation and inspiration for this article has come from Jack Canfield’s The Success Principles. If you don’t have it in your library, get off your butt, take action and get it. It’s brilliant.

A very useful example – so easy to complicate, procrastinate and delay. Just how simple can success be? So the important thing is to see yourself doing it. Lay each brick as near to perfect as possible – as Will Smith quotes.
