Your opportunity to win an I-pad – and make a full-power start to the year. Challenge Three – Take the reins.
Alright, the Power Challenge is in full-swing. There are 360 (so far!) heroic individuals who have committed to making this an awesome year. I’m giving you eight quick but deep challenges to see if you are fully in alignment.
(Think of it as a tune up for your success engine.)
There’s still time to get on board. Find the challenges here. As long as you do all eight challenges
Ok, so challenge number three. This is about self-discipline.
The road to self-mastery begins with mastering the body.
The Buddha said that the conscious mind’s controls the body the way a rider controls an elephant. The elephant is strong, and has agendas of it’s own. It won’t just do what you say unless you have established control.
So today, I want you to hit up the blog and write down one thing that you’re going to do this week that goes against the instincts of your body.
Maybe it will be taking a cold shower. Maybe it will be going a day without food. Maybe it’s walking up the stairs to your office, which was Stephen B’s answer to our first challenge. (Stephen, you’ve got to come up with something else.)
Think of just one thing you can do this week. Declare it to everyone on
Then do it.
And when you do it, whatever it is, I want you to pause just before you do it and watch for two things.
1. The Whingeing
First, listen to your body’s excuses. Standing on the edge of a cold lake, you might here yourself complain, “It’s too cold, I’m might catch a flu, I’ve just eaten, I look ridiculous in these budgie smugglers.” Sometimes your body is crafty. Sometimes just whingey. But it always pushes back.
But notice how your body sort of has a capacity to over-ride your inner monologue. Notice how your body’s thoughts can be mistaken for your own thoughts, if you’re not watching carefully. Notice how your boldest agendas can be derailed by the worst and whiniest instincts of our body.
This happens to us ALL. THE. TIME.
There is an art to knowing when your mind is raising reasonable objections, and when your body is just being a little wuss bag. It takes time to know the difference.
2. The Loving Command
Second, I want you to force yourself to do whatever it was you were planning to do. Jump into the lake. Get up at 5 a.m. Fast.
(Actually, fasting is great because you are constantly being presented with temptations.)
Whatever it is, assert your authority, assert your control, and just do it.
But as you’re doing it, I want you to hold an attitude of “loving command.”
Don’t go hating on your body. Don’t go screaming at your body, “Shut up you flabby ball of failure. We’re doing this. I’m throwing us in this lake. F-youuuuu!”
No. Hold an attitude of loving command. Say, “I can see you don’t want to jump in this lake. I know that it’s cold. But I want this for us. And I have the reins. I am in control.”
And then do it.
I think an attitude to loving command is the key to having sustainable, heart-centred self-discipline, which in turn is one of the key pillars of success.
So that’s it. That’s the third challenge. Share the act of discipline you’re going to commit to this week right here in the comments section. And then watch for those two things – The Whingeing and The Loving Command.
I really believe it will help you grow a more powerful self-discipline and self-mastery this year.
Power on!
Jon
Ps – Why not rope somebody else into this challenge. Who do you know who could travel the road of mastery with you? Forward them this email and get them on board.

Christmas is over. And so is eating chocolate. So this week I will start:
1. a no chocolate ban and
2. I’ve been trying to get into rhythm with a workout schedule to achieve 4 workouts/week in week 1 and 3 workouts/week for week 2 for a 12 week period. Basically every other day. I’m really good for first part of week one then my body is sore and I just don’t feel like it. I did it yesterday and MUST continue tomorrow. I always feel so good afterwards pushing through when my body telling me it doesn’t want to. The sense of empowerment that you did what you set out to do despite not wanting to in that moment. Funny part is that no matter how many times I achieve this it’s still just as hard the next time. I’m hoping there comes a time when my body is screaming for the workouts and I don’t have to battle my brain to convince myself this is what we need! Crazy!

And I’m declaring it to the WORLD.
I am going to become a non-smoker – this week.
Once I do this, I can do ANYTHING….and I’ll finally believe that.
PS If anyone else is at this stage, feel free to join with me.

Running has always been challenging for me. I have memories of being last at school, of feeling dejected and ashamed that running was not a strength. So this week I will run. And as I run I will remember the joy I feel in completing a run, and be grateful that I can run, that my body is able and well.

I am going to clean out my shed and put back everything I was going to throw out, This should take about a week at a few hours a day.
Theresia Jordans says
Why put back the things you were going to throw out? I’m a hoarder and my goal is to sort out my office, downsize as much as possible so that I can work at my desk without the clutter. Ditto for the craft room, then dining room. Then I might not even NEED the cupboard under the carport that I have been planning to build for storage. Also go a whole day without sugar – no coffee, tea etc. Only water and no biscuits. Will give me MORE energy without the letdown. My body is already saying ‘yeh but! Funeral tomorrow, physio Friday, volunteer Sat. Etc’.

Timbo says
I’m guessing Jon will want to know what’s in your diary to make this one count. But even if it doesn’t end up counting, your action is probably more important than an iPad. Good luck.

So mine was to get up at 5 am to be able to have breakfast, walk the dogs and do yoga to be able to start gardening by 7 am and finish up at 11 ish before the heat hit. I knew I would be tempted to stay in bed and I was, under the air con. I woke, looked at the dogs and thought they’re not even awake, I should get up when they do… I thought about the heat and how its not good for you, how I don’t want to be working around concrete on a 40+ day. I thought about just making a coffee and watching you tube clips under the air con. It took about 2 minutes of this, than I turned the light on (got a serious greasy from one dog, the other has no eyes so he was happy).
I than said to myself ‘the dogs love their walk and its good for you too’, ‘You need your yoga and you always feel better after you’ve done it’. I thought about the compound effect and how doing early mornings for the next week or so in this heat means I will make money and enjoy the afternoons more knowing I’ve done the work. Than I said to myself “when you get home you can have a cool shower, a large class of cold kombucha, a coffee and than a nap”. I have done just that.
In the 2 minutes before I rose from bed the decision I made could have changed my day completely. Giving myself a little compassion helped, took the pressure off and made it easier to get up. I have achieved everything I wanted to and more. Lawns are mowed and dogs are happy, back asleep under the air con where they were so rudely awoken from this morning ha.
Victoria Mizzi says
My elastic glass of white wine every night that stretches to a bottle. Bad sugar habit. No more.
Started a 21 day Keto diet challenge Monday. First day easy. Yesterday hard. No energy, brain fog. Keto flu. My body wanted to know where all the sugar (90% of it wine) had gone. Lay about like slug. Today better. Brain learning fat is the new sugar.
Note to self – sparkling water is good, sparkling water is good …
Alan Sizer says

Sue says
Get up, dress up, turn up for an early morning walk to start each day. Maybe not too dressed up but something more appropriate that PJs. Start this routine in my life. When I do get motivated and in this routine I achieve so much more in the rest of my day.

As life is pretty hectic a lot of the time (self-inflicted mostly) I often find it a challenge to stay present in the moment. This is an area I really want to improve in so I commit to meditating for 10mins each day and then to continue on with this.
Robert Kumar says
My mind wants to plan & tackle so many goals like going to bed early, getting up early, doing some early morning meditation and going for an early morning long walk but the body so far has not been in synch. So I have decided that for these aforementioned goals I shall only listen to my mind & not my body. It may be difficult at first but I plan to push myself and try to achieve as many goals as I possibly can.
Andy says

Eldon Stevenson says
I will make going to bed at 10pm and getting up at 6am a new habit instead of being such a night owl as I currently am.

I will find a yoga class this week and attend it! I have very stiff hips and can’t sit cross-legged nor do some of the poses but I know it will make me stronger and more flexible. It’s just feeling like a kluts while everyone else seems totally flexible with ease!
Felicity says
I am going to do at least one exercise recommended by my myotherapist every day.
Susanne kendall says
I will commit to not participating in what we call at work “fat friday” this week. So that means refraining from eating any of the treats out the back of our workspace. It generally is a large spread of chocolate, lollies, nuts chips etc.
Timbo says
I’m going to eat dinner before 7pm, then have nothing more to eat before breakfast. No more nuts & dates (telling myself they’re a healthy snack), no more chocolate (telling myself it’s 70% cocoa & therefore okay), no more chips (completely ignoring the lack of nutrition).
This evening grazing is not much of an instinct, but it is certainly a habit that the body has got into and I need to snap it out of it.
Timbo says
This proved to be one of the most interesting challenges for me. I’ve met the challenge of giving up the snacks. Had to argue with myself a couple of times, but got it done.
But as I said, I wasn’t sure it was much of an instinct, so I decided to borrow a suggestion and made a commitment to cold showers.
Listening to my little voice has been really instructive. It was screaming at me not to do jump under the jets at the start, but as the days have gone on, the voice has slowly eased off to a quiet whinge, knowing it’s not going to win.
And it hasn’t.
Jody Chambers says
I’m going to finish my list of daily jobs before I crack a cold one, at least for one day.
tristan says
I am weeding the garden this week. It is overgrown with lawn runners and knee high weeds. Every time I have looked at it I thought to myself, “I really need to get rid of those weeds… f**k it, that’s too much effort.” They haven’t stopped growing though, nobody else has decided to do it for me and they haven’t miraculously disappeared one morning either. I’m pushing past the whinging this time. I also know I’ll probably feel sore afterwards, but I know it will be a “good” pain. I’m looking forward to the feeling of satisfaction that will come at completion!
Sondra Bellert says
I’m going to cut out chocolate for a week in an effort to squash my post lunch sugar addiction starting today. I’m also going to meditate each night for a week before going to sleep to improve my sleep habits.

Peter Gron says
I was going to take some time off during the current heat wave but I need the income so I’m going to work through it. Working outdoors mostly.
Belinda Helps says
3 x 30 min cardio sessions. I have a 5 km fun run in April and last week when I tried an outdoor jog I can only do 200-300 m before I’ve had to stop so lots of improvement to be made. I’ve been so exhausted this week I have only done long walks instead so far
Maree says
Fasting is the one thing that does go against my bodies instinct – I will commit to intermittent fasting. Something I have been thinking of for a while. So its out there now. Gotta do it.
Kris Anderson says
Do a 2 week gym workout challenge..
Benny says
So I read the blog the other day… and I did the challenge this morning. I ran up one of the biggest hills Westbof Brisbane without stopping. It was only an 8km round trip but my body wouldn’t stop making excuses on the way up the relentless, steep, and false crested rise to the top. I was even telling myself that I was going to run out of time and that I had to get back home to have a shower and get to work. But no. I told my body that we weren’t going to stop until we reached the top. And we did. The trip down was invigorating and well worth the run up.
Heidi says
I will get up 15 minutes earlier each morning before work and do my stretching exercises. Anyone who knows me will know that getting up even one minute earlier than I absolutely have to is a BIG commitment on my part! Lol ?

I have been thinking of what to do for a few days now as l have a few things that go against the instincts of my body that I need to work on, I will start with getting back to walking an hour 4 times a week!
The goal was to walk to the beach not drive down then start my walk – I use to do this every day 10 years ago. So when l awake at 04:35 and lay there thinking get out of bed and do it… I went over what l had read in this blog and pulled myself out of bed and DID it woohoo.
The monkey chatter did not stop all the way down to the beach the conversation with myself was this is good enough you can turn around now! it was hard but l pushed myself all the way and l did not give up it took me 35 mins to reach the beach my goal is to get it down to 15 minutes then walk on the beach for 45 minutes.
Loving this blog.

Last night I took a swim in the cold river in the dark. That was not scary. I enjoyed it.
BUT I do not won’t to open email. 270 in the couple of days I took a break.
My head screams at me that I do not want to do this. Yes I am somewhat old school.
So I have opened them and I am dealing with them and controlling them by blocking some out, deleting and generally managing them.
It may seem strange to many that this is such a challenge but I am done with wasting the time distracting emails take and focused on forging a new direction.

Barbara Lockhart says
One thing to do that goes against my body’s instincts? What would put me out of my comfort zone? Test me? I think that I will try to do some things this week with my non-dominant hand, and just see how much more sharper my senses will have to be when doing this! Hmm….sounds like intense thought will be needed, but I think even cleaning my teeth with my left hand sounds like a challenge! I’ll let you know….Hugs, Barbara xxxx

There’s a certain plant in my garden that only blooms overnight. The large white flowers are ethereal and spectacular, but I usually miss them because they close and wither by sunrise.
My challenge is to set the alarm for the wee small hours, go outside to admire the flowers and spend time appreciating all I have.

William Gilfillan says
I will try walking around the block once every day in the morning even if it is painful & slow. I need to try getting my back & knees working to prevent muscle deterioration & loss of mobility. If successful I may walk to the store to get groceries, but not too many so I can still carry them without too much pain. I can save petrol money by not using the car so much also.
Carlijn White says
Cut out the sugar and most fats, lose weight by eating healthier; more fruit and vegetables, smoothies. Want to lose 7 kg.
Also committing to spending 30 minutes each day of serious jazz-piano exercises. If you don’t understand jazz; substitute jazz for mathematics and you get an idea how hard it is to commit to.
I love to play and play by ear but without the proper understanding of the underlying rules, I won’t make headway. And really; jazz is so much fun; it’ll be worth it.

Missed this one as my PC failed – back on track with a new one.
My challenge will be an early morning swim – say 5:30am used to do it regularly then completely slacked off and haven’t done it for years. Bit embarassed about my lack of fitness (read flab).
My other more pleasant challenge is to have an early morning coffee with my wife (our time) so we can talk openly and set goals/make plans together for the coming week/month/year.?

Build it & they will come style…..
Funny I carry several opportunities in life I had done all the hard ground work only to fail following through……No regrets can’t put a value on wisdom. I do think however, I took the complacent option believing loyalty and hard work for my employer would be recognised and appreciated…..

Patricia says
I am committing to 3 day fast and when it’s finished I will continue to not eat between 8pm and 11am for a 15 hour overnight fast every week night. I will also try going vegetarian just 2 days a week to cut down on meat for my own health and weight and also because it helps to save the environment if we don’t eat so much meat. It takes something like 12 times the amount of land to graze cattle on to produce 1lb of meat protein than it does to grow 1lb of plant protein, which is a contributory reason for rainforest being cut down. Very bad for the environment.
Josh says
I’m late into this one but I will get up sooo early at least 2 times this week to see a sunrise and do crazy stretching exercises while it comes up. Doesn’t seem like much but it’s way against my normal sleep/awake times, especially for Summer.

Getting 8+ hours of sleep every weeknight – Now that is a challenge I’d like to accept by using the loving command technique. Tell my mind that the dopamine that I get from a full nights rest far surpasses the collection of small dopamine hits that my mind gets when it catches up with all the notifications from the top drawer
