One final word on Trump vs Clinton – don’t let the space lizards win.
Let’s step back and take a look at the bigger picture.
First up, what does it mean that the American presidential contest gets so much air-time in Australia? I try to keep it in perspective, but since I started writing about Trump, I get more questions about that than anything else.
You might say that American politics shapes the world and Australia’s future. And that’s true to a degree but we’ve got to keep it in proportion.
I mean, how many Australians know ANY Indonesian political figures, let alone as intimately as we know Hilary and The Don? (See? We’re on a first names basis.)
One of the reasons that is has become such big news in Australia is that it is just such a fantastic spectacle.
I mean that very literally. It is such a fantastic spectacle.
Does it seem a little contrived to anyone else?
The drama is intense. To Clinton supporters, you have a woman bravely driving history on its ark towards justice, seeking to become the first female president, only to have everything you hate about rich, white, male privilege embodied in single, loud-mouthed reality TV star.
It’s Independence Day meets Erin Brockovich.
To Trump supporters, you have a maverick gun-slinger who doesn’t care for your rules and who’s not afraid to tell it like it is, coming to town to topple the evil matriarch of a system that subverts democracy, sells influence to foreign powers, and feathers its own nest at the expense or hard-working Americans.
It’s Dirty Dozen meets 101 Dalmatians.
It seems to be engineered to deliver maximum heat and energy. Chat rooms across America and across the world are going into melt-down.
Does it seem contrived to you?
Now, I’m not saying that reptilian space aliens have orchestrated the whole thing to distract us from their plans to make slaves of us all, but it is definitely a useful way to think about it.
For every minute that you’re yelling at someone over the internet, “debating” whether Donald Trump is an idiotic toilet-brush, or if Hilary Clinton should be up on charges, that’s a minute you could have spent being more awesome – learning, growing or reading my blogs.
If you’re doing it for recreation that’s another story. Go nuts. Some people like to work out on boxing bags. Some people like to yell at people on the internet. Whatever gets you off.
But don’t kid yourself that getting all frothy and flustered about an election you have no ability to influence, (or actually any intention of trying to influence on the ground) is a productive use of your time.
It is theatre that the space lizards have set up to keep you from the real work.
So what is the real work?
This is an interesting question. (It is the only interesting question.)
It is something that every man needs to figure out for himself. (It’s something every woman needs to figure out for herself as well, once the men shut up and stop telling women how to live their lives.)
Why are you here? What are you here to do?
A lot of people look at me and think I’m all about wealth and lifestyle. They see the pictures of me drinking ouzo on a yacht in the Mediterranean, and think that’s what I’m about.
It’s not. Wealth and time are tools. I build as much wealth and time into my life as I can, because it allows me to do what I want to do – what I’m here to do.
Now, I’m not going to go into the details of my life mission here. I’m a private man. But it starts with providing freedom and security to my wife and family. It starts with helping others.
(I just happen to find that the warm feeling of helping others goes well with a belly full of ouzo… on a yacht… and maybe some fresh lobster, thanks James.)
But one thing I can tell you for sure is that my life mission does not include stressing out about who’s going to win elections in foreign countries.
(Take that, space lizards!)
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
At every level of your life, from who you are as a person to the kind of world you’re living in, you have creative power. You can be whatever you want to be. You can live however you want to live.
You CAN create your future.
If this isn’t true then I don’t know what is.
But life is short, so to me, a minute not spent up to your elbows in creative work, is a minute wasted. It’s a minute lost.
I know a lot of people here find the prospect of President Trump or President Hilary equally horrifying.
But don’t get sucked in to all the negativity. Here’s a couple of thoughts.
1. Clinton would be the first female President of the United States. After Thatcher, Merkel, Gillard and a bunch of others, we might be able to say that the glass ceiling is finally broken (though there’s more work to do). It would be a big step.
2. Trump has changed the Republican party forever. Remember during the convention when he said the country needs to do more to protect LGBTQ people – people he called “wonderful Americans” – and everyone cheered? Name another Republican who could have pulled that off.
In that light, whoever wins the contest, it could be seen as a massive step forward – another proud moment in the painful slow evolution of our society.
Nice work space lizards.
What’s the bigger picture for you?
